West Dorset is the widely considered as the most beautiful area of coastal Britain. Scattered along the longest coastline in the country are fantastically diverse towns that occupy Jurassic Coast.

Furthest west, flirting with the Devon border, is the popular tourist destination of Lyme Regis.  A hugely successful marine based town Lyme Bay hosts one of the most dramatic seafronts around, with a concrete ‘Cob’ guarding the town from the peril of the crashing waves. So illustrious is the harbour at Lyme, that there is a 10-year waiting list to get a permanent mooring. The most exciting time the town endures, is perhaps the RNLI lifeboat week in mid-August.  Every year fantastic spectacles are put on to raise money for the lifeboat club, including a trawler race and a tug of war.

Further along the coast you reach the famous rope-making town of Bridport and West Bay. This lively market town is renowned for is rural based community exhibited by Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall in his Channel 4 series’ ‘River Cottage’.  West Bay is most famous for its stunning cliffs, which tower above Chesil beach.  It is also the new owner of a spanking new harbour, aimed and protecting the gorgeous coastal landscape.

Weymouth and Portland is the end of this magnificent coastline, and is arguably the most metropolitan of the West Dorset towns. Seafront pubs and clubs light up Weymouth until the early hours of the morning and prove very popular with the visiting tourists. Portland Bill is the island that is just afore from the Weymouth shoreline and will be home to all maritime activities at the 2012 Olympic games.

The new state of the art marina will host everything from sailing to windsurfing and will require over a thousand volunteers.

West Dorset is also the birthplace of a handful of the finest novelists of the past Millennium. Thomas Hardy was born and raised in Dorchester, and many of his novels feature aspects of the life in the county. Author of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ and ‘Emma’, Jane Austen was also a famous face familiar with the region.
Along with these wonderful seaside towns, West Dorset also gives refuge to some of the most unique villages with remarkably striking landscapes. It is a beautiful area of the world, that thankfully has remained mostly untouched by cumbersome hand of man and now we hope you can find your ideal property in West Dorset.
